My Fair Lady at the Orpheum

My Fair Lady, the newest show to grace the Orpheum stage in Minneapolis, is nostalgic to say the least and described by many as the “perfect musical.” For an older generation, it resonates of the movie with Audrey Hepburn and the original Broadway with Julie Andrews. For a younger generation, it reminds us probably of a friend’s high school production or maybe our own. It’s a classic musical that theatre and non-theatre people know, and it typically will sell because of that reason. While this production shines like the freshly made-up Eliza Doolittle, the question we ask ourselves is: does this story still need to be told….?

A Rossipe for Succeess

Ross Mathews is going on another national tour, bringing the Name Drop book tour to the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis on Sunday, March 1.

Before we even began to talk about the book, I had to gush a little. I’ve interviewed celebrities, but it’s been a while since I got to speak to someone who did make an impact in my life. Upon speaking with Ross Mathews, we joked about how cold it was in Minneapolis compared to the lovely Los Angeles weather he was experiencing. He promised to bring his coat and no matter how cold it was, he talked about his enthusiasm for the Twin Cities….

Twelfth Night at the Guthrie Theater

Each year, the Guthrie Theater produces a classical Shakespeare show, and this year it’s Twelfth Night hitting the stage. It’s well known that sometimes Shakespeare just isn’t for everyone, and that’s okay, it truly is. That being said, I think everyone should still experience as much Shakespeare as they can, especially if they are a theater fan. You never know when you’re going to find that one show that may stick with you…

Once on this island at the orway

Two years ago, I was on a trip in New York City and was gifted tickets to the Broadway revival of Once On This Island. It was a magical night full of dancing, singing and laughs. Now two years later, the show is on a national tour and is currently playing at the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts where I got to see it again; however, this one was a little different…

Seeing Himself on Stage: A Convo. with Shannon TL Kearns

While some may think theatre is just dressing up and imagining things, it’s much more than that. At the root of it, theatre is about storytelling and sharing the human experience. That’s why Shannon TL Kearns, artistic director for Uprising Theatre Company, started performing and writing theatre at a young age. If you grew up as a self-described “theatre kid”, you know the feeling of being in the theatre at your school or local…

Bernarda alba at Theatre
Latté Da

An area premiere can be both exciting, nerve-wracking and intriguing all the same time. It’s exciting because we as audience members are going into a show we really don’t know anything about; both the plot and music are new and fresh to us. However, that can also be a little strange to someone who doesn’t mind seeing Little Shop of Horrors twenty times because it’s familiar. Humans like the familiar…

The bridges of madison county at artistry

A few weeks ago, I published a piece which included eight shows to look out for in 2020. It was stiff competition, but there was absolutely no reason why The Bridges of Madison County, which is currently playing at Artistry, wouldn’t be on that list. Artistry continues to gain more and more momentum with their visually stunning and superbly cast productions…
